Between the triple Stromberg induction, 1939 Banjo steering wheel, and synchronized three-speed top-loader transmission, this award-winning '28 Ford Huckster delivers an incredible blend of 1930s speed-shop grit and artisan carpentry.

Description

This award-winning 1928 Ford Model A custom Huckster/Surf Wagon features a period-correct, mixed-era hot rod layout built on an original steel cowl. Powered by a 255ci Flathead V8 paired with a three-speed synchronized manual transmission, the truck combines vintage speed parts with a one-off master-built oak body and modernized 12-volt electronics. It is offered for sale with two surfboards, a surf rack, a build board, a display stand, an original jack, and a clean Florida title listing the vehicle as a 1928 Ford.

The body consists of an original filler-free 1928 Ford steel cowl paired with a 1932 Ford grille shell, a chrome frame horn spreader bar, and a custom oak huckster body built by master carpenter John Van Lente. The exterior is finished in Harley-Davidson Dark Root Beer three-stage metallic paint. Equipment includes functional roll-down canvas side curtains, roll-down door windows, leather door check straps, dual side mirrors, and a functional tilt-out front windshield with replacement chrome support arms. A removable roof-mounted surf rack holds two included surfboards.

The vehicle stands on original 1935 Ford 16-inch wire wheels finished with chrome beauty rings and V8-branded hubcaps. The wheels are wrapped in vintage-style road tires.

The cabin features a custom bench seat mounted over an integrated seat riser box, which houses all vehicle wiring, the fuse block, and a 12-volt lithium battery. Accessories include an eight-bank switch panel, a 12-volt accessory port, a USB charger, a digital battery voltage display, and a hidden Bluetooth/USB/AM/FM stereo head unit operated via remote control. Auditory warning devices include an original-style oogah horn, a fire siren, and an under-cab air horn backed by an onboard air compressor.

The driver operates the vehicle via a 1939-replica Banjo steering wheel connected to a rack-and-pinion steering assembly. The steel dash houses functional factory-style instrumentation including a speedometer, fuel gauge, voltmeter, and original-style map light, while a push-button starter switch is mounted to the driver-side seat riser.

The engine bay houses a 255ci 1953 Mercury 8CM Flathead V8 engine finished in gloss black with chrome acorn head nuts, Red's exhaust headers, and a chrome spoon-style gas pedal. Induction is managed by a tri-power aluminum intake topped with three Stromberg carburetors; the outer two carburetors are currently fitted with custom block-off plates for single-carburetor operation, though an uninstalled low-pressure electric fuel pump and regulator are included to return all three to service. Engine cooling is handled by an aluminum radiator paired with a dually controlled electric fan featuring an automatic temperature sensor and manual dash override switch. Fuel delivery uses the stock gravity-fed cowl tank. Power is routed through a 1938-spec synchronized three-speed top-loader manual transmission.

Hello Everyone,My name is Ed Budd and I am the owner and builder of this 1928 Huckster/ Surf Wagon. I originally thought that I would never sell it but we all know things change. When it was built I sourced the best components that I could find. The build took me 18 months and I enjoyed every moment. I will be using the sale proceeds to do my next passion project, a 1991 G-20 shorty panel van going onto a 1985 K-5 Blazer chassis. Thanks for looking and I will be happy to answer any questions.
