Wrench Report

Clamber up into this Power Wagon and get ready to conquer some rough terrain! This Robinson Restoration build is pure, unadulterated American offroad heavy-metal history. Updates like power steering, a 12 volt conversion, and a fully refurbished exterior and interior are going to make driving and owning this Power Wagon much more pleasant than it was even brand new in 1948.

Description

This 1948 Dodge Power Wagon underwent a frame-off restoration carried out by Robinson Restoration and Service of Denton, Texas, between 2016 and early 2025. With an investment totaling approximately $236,000, the build included extensive metalwork, mechanical rebuilds, wiring updates, and final assembly. Retaining its factory-style four-wheel-drive layout, the truck features an upgraded power steering system, 12-volt electronics, and custom paintwork. It is offered with extensive restoration documentation and a clean Texas title.

The original cab, hood, fenders, and doors were stripped to bare metal, repaired, and reassembled, while a replacement bed sourced from Vintage Power Wagons was fitted to factory dimensions. The exterior is finished in a custom light blue shade inspired by the original Dodge color palette. Body equipment includes a functional original Braden MU-2 PTO-driven front winch and a rebuilt split-pane tilt-out windshield setup with overhauled hardware.

The Power Wagon sits on custom 17-inch steel wheels designed after period styles, wrapped in Tornel bias-ply truck tires that measure 7.50-17. A matching spare is mounted passenger side on the outside of the truck bed.

The cab houses a bench seat sourced from a 1950 Dodge pickup that was narrowed to fit and reupholstered in a factory-style pattern. The interior retains its restored original dashboard layout painted in the body color, factory-style cab hardware, and floor-mounted mechanical controls.

The driver operates the truck via a factory three-spoke steering wheel set ahead of the restored original gauge cluster. Floor controls manage the four-speed transmission, dual-range transfer case, and PTO winch engagement.

The engine bay houses the rebuilt original 230ci L-head inline 6-cylinder engine featuring rebored cylinders, replacement pistons, rings, bearings, and fresh gaskets. Mechanical updates include power steering that was recently added, a 12-volt electrical system conversion and an electric pusher fuel pump. Power is routed through a rebuilt four-speed manual transmission with a granny-low first gear and a rebuilt dual-range transfer case directing drive to both axles.

The chassis utilizes the factory heavy-duty frame, leaf spring suspension, and solid axles, all of which were overhauled during the restoration. Stopping power is provided by a fully rebuilt hydraulic drum brake system at all 4 wheels.
