Wrench Report
RestoMods Head Mechanic. 20 year classic car mechanic & builder.
Firing up this numbers-matching "flaming black pearl" 88 and rolling on a freshly rebuilt V8 with barely 2,000 miles since the rebuild is a genuine step back into 1957 done right. The step back in time experience continues as you slide into the old-school comfort of the refurbished red and grey interior with factory chrome and custom headliner. Other refreshments and upgrades, including power steering, a dual exhaust system, power brakes with a new master cylinder and booster, and a completely refreshed fuel and charging system, make this Olds easy to drive as well as easy on the eyes.
Description
This 1957 Oldsmobile 88 is a custom-painted cruiser finished in black pearl with True Fire flames, purchased by the current owner about 10 years ago and given its custom paintwork roughly three years ago after the car was made road-ready. Powered by its rebuilt 371ci "Rocket" V8 and original Jetaway 4-speed automatic, this Olds features a dual exhaust system, power steering with new hoses to the steering box, and power brakes backed by a rebuilt master cylinder and brake booster. It is now offered with a clean Illinois title, original service book, parts book, and a single set of keys.

The exterior was stripped to bare steel, with all minor body repairs completed before an epoxy primer, 301 primer surfacer, black pearl base coat, True Fire flame graphics, and clear coat were applied. All stainless trim was removed and polished before being reinstalled after the body and paint work. The car is fitted with custom steel cruiser skirts and dual sway-back antennas.

The car rides on its stock wheels and hub caps, wrapped in Coker radial tires with approximately 500 miles since installation. A wheel alignment was performed at the time the new tires were fitted.

A red and grey interior was installed approximately 10 years ago, around the same time the car was purchased by the current owner. The bench seats are fitted with lap belts and are completed by matching carpet, door cards, and headliner.

Inside the cabin are found the factory gauges and switches, an analog clock, and an AM radio, all set within the red over chrome dash. The 5-digit odometer shows just under 68,400 miles.

Power is provided by a rebuilt 371ci 6.1L "Rocket" V8 paired to the original Jetaway 4-speed automatic, and the car is reported to have been driven approximately 2,000 miles since the engine work was completed. The charging system includes a rebuilt generator and a new voltage regulator, backed by a battery about two months old. The fuel system was also gone through, with a new tank, new filler neck, new fuel lines from tank to pump, and a rebuilt fuel pump.

Photos of the paint work are included. Underneath are four new shocks and new front wheel bearings. Power steering is fitted with new hoses running from the pump to the steering box, and braking is handled by power-assisted drum brakes, backed by a rebuilt master cylinder and brake booster, four new wheel cylinders, and freshly cut drums.
