Wrench Report

By Chris Esparza

RestoMods Head Mechanic. 20 year classic car mechanic & builder.

A nicely refurbished compact open-top cruiser that mixes the light AMC chassis with mid-sixties Ford V8 power. Very interesting choice going with the 289ci Ford V8 and a C4 automatic transmission, gotta give creativity points there. The car seems to be in good shape overall with that bright red paint and updated interior color combo. Altogether an ideal AMC classic to take out on a weekend ride in the Fall or Spring with the top down and breeze in your face!

Description

This 1964 Rambler American 440 convertible is a modified compact open-top cruiser that completed a multi-year refurbishment approximately two years ago. While the chassis and body have approximately 75,000 actual miles, a replacement instrument cluster shows 94,000 miles. The car features a 1964 Ford V8 powertrain swap, a refreshed interior, and serviced chassis hardware. It is offered with a clean Missouri title.

The exterior features driver-quality red paint applied approximately six years ago. Exterior metalwork during the refurbishment included cutting out rust on the lower rear quarters and welding in replacement panels, while the floor and trunk pans remain original. A black convertible top with a replacement hydraulic motor-pump assembly was installed two years ago. The windshield exhibits light scratching and small chips.

The vehicle rides on a set of vintage 14 inch Magnum-style wheels that were media-blasted, repainted, and fitted with new beauty rings and Kumho Solus all-season radial tires.

The cabin was re-upholstered two years ago, featuring refreshed red and black vinyl seats, matching door panels, and replacement carpeting. The dashboard houses a replacement instrument cluster featuring a calibrated speedometer and fuel gauge, supplemented by aftermarket oil pressure and water temperature gauges. The vacuum windshield wipers are disconnected, and the heater core is bypassed due to a leak. The vehicle is not equipped with air conditioning. The driver operates the car via a factory steering wheel and a column-mounted shifter for the automatic transmission.

The engine bay houses a 1964-vintage 289ci Ford V8 engine that was inspected and rebuilt, accumulating less than 1,000 miles since reassembly. Upgrades include an aluminum radiator, a thermostatically controlled electric fan, Fox-body exhaust headers, and a replacement dual exhaust system. Power is routed through a rebuilt 1964 Ford C4 automatic transmission to a stock AMC rear end fitted with 3.31:1 gears and fresh fluid.

The stock chassis retains manual steering and refurbished four-wheel manual drum brakes fitted with replacement lines and hoses. The suspension utilizes stock-replacement front shock absorbers and heavy-duty rear coilover shocks, supported by a recent chassis alignment.

I was watching the videos again and noticed that the voltmeter is not working is that hooked up

Jcjarvis Seller Aug 13, 8:37 am PDT
Nope, never could get voltmeter to work. Charging system works properly without any issues.

Does the engine run cool with the electric fan

Jcjarvis Seller Aug 11, 5:08 pm PDT
It’s actually a bit cold blooded until it warms up, then generally stays around 180-190 while driving. It’ll get a bit warmer at extended idle on a hot day. The fan thermostat switches on at 180.

I was wondering if you had the boot cover for over the top when it's down

Jcjarvis Seller Aug 11, 9:34 am PDT
No, my interior guy was going to make a boot but never did. May be able to order from one of the AMC vendors.

I was watching the videos and hear a rattling vibration when it was in gear and ready to drive just wondering if you know what the cause for it is. Thanks nice car I like it!

Jcjarvis Seller Aug 10, 4:20 pm PDT
Just some header rattle when engine is cold, it’s a snug fit.

Cute car but still a lot of work to be done. Surprised the owner didn't replace the heater core. With all the 304's and 360's around I would have stayed with AMC engine myself.

Jcjarvis Seller Aug 10, 11:49 am PDT
I have several cars and I’m getting older, just time to pass on to the next owner.
