Wrench Report

By Chris Esparza

RestoMods Head Mechanic. 20 year classic car mechanic & builder.

Kudos to the work put into this build and for verifying it as a true GTO-optioned Lemans, no easy feat on these first-year models. The 389ci V8 engine bay showcases a concours-level rotisserie restoration, featuring correct Tri-Power carburetion, flawless factory engine paint, and crisp stainless plumbing throughout. Beneath the floorboards, the frame-off chassis work presents like new, with pristine frame rails, fresh suspension hardware, and a fully detailed 3.90 positraction rear end. Combined with its correct Silvermist Gray finish, black vinyl roof, and red-line tires over deluxe covers, this GTO represents a remarkable execution of a milestone muscle car build.

Description

This 1964 Pontiac Lemans GTO is an authentic, Pontiac Historic Services (PHS) documented performance hardtop that has completed a frame-off rotisserie restoration. Powered by a factory-rated 348-horsepower 389ci Tri-Power V8 engine mated to a four-speed manual transmission and a 3.90:1 positraction rear axle, this Lemans GTO was stripped to bare metal and restored to its factory-correct color combination. It is now offered with PHS documentation and a clean North Carolina title by the selling dealer.

The steel body is refinished in its original Silvermist Gray paint with a black vinyl roof cover, detailed with chrome front and rear bumpers, GTO crest badging, split front grilles, a driver-side mirror, and polished rocker and wheel-arch moldings. The cowl tag code D2A comfirms that the vehicle came from the factory in Silvermist Gray with a black vinyl top.

The car rides on polished steel wheels wearing Pontiac wheel covers with faux knock-offs, and red-line tires.

The cabin features an interior that has been completely restored to factory specifications, such as restored black vinyl bucket seats up front, a matching rear bench seat, color-keyed carpeting, dark door panels, and a full-length center console structure. Additional appointments include a radio with a rear speaker reverb unit and a locking glovebox.

The interior also features a factory-style steering wheel mounted ahead of factory instrumentation including a recessed speedometer, auxiliary indicators, and an original tachometer surrounded by a brushed aluminum bezel. A floor-mounted Hurst shifter manages the four-speed manual transmission.

The engine bay houses a period-correct 389ci Pontiac V8 engine fed by a factory Tri-Power setup utilizing three two-barrel carburetors and an aluminum intake manifold. Engine cooling is supported by a heavy-duty four-core radiator, while fuel distribution is handled via stainless steel fuel lines. Power is routed through a four-speed manual transmission to a 3.90:1 positraction rear axle.

The chassis features a fully restored frame equipped with an independent front suspension, a coil-sprung rear suspension, and stainless steel brake lines. Stopping power is provided by a hydraulic drum brake system at all four corners.

The broadcast sheet printout from Pontiac Historical Services featuring all of the Lemans GTO's selected options.

This will pair nice with my current silvermist gray 64! My dad had one when he got back from Vietnam, owed it for two months then someone stole it. I have always wanted to gift a 64 4 speed to him and would love the opportunity two drive both of ours together!

Engine rebuild history and current milage on rebuild if it was rebuilt?
And I noticed scratches, dings, flaws in paint.
How old are the display pictures that are uploaded on Buy The Car auction site?
Thank you.

RKMotors Seller Oct 12, 12:12 pm PDT
The pictures you see were taken January of this year(2026). We don't know when the last rebuild of the engine was completed beyond 2000. In 2024 we did a repaint on the car, replaced spark plugs, fuel filter, thermostat, and fan clutch.

Hi
Are those very recent pictures of the restoration and a true representation of the condition of appearance now.
Any body flaws the u can point out dings , scratched etc.?
What is the engine rebuild history if any and what is the milage on the rebuild.
What is the "second"digit in the block code in the upper right side of the engine block,
7 ? X
Please respond.
Thank you.

RKMotors Seller Oct 12, 12:13 pm PDT
The second digit APPEARS to be an '8'. The stamp wasn't struck very hard, so we only see the lower half of the number. The image posted is about the most legible we can make this stamp.

So,
What exactly is this "period correct" 389 cubic inch engine out of and what are the specs.
Could it be a 389 cubic inch out of a 1962 pontiac Catalina with an added triple carb setup?
Please exacting what engine is in this GTO ??
This is very important to me as im most interested in bidding.
Please respond with acurate specifications
THANK YOU.
THANK YOU
