Wrench Report

Low-volume British factory provenance meets Windsor muscle in this Brightwheel Cobra, one of roughly 260 Vipers built between 1986 and 1989. A developed 351 with GT-40 aluminum heads sits in a stainless-lined engine bay, the Tremec T5 puts the shifting in the driver's hands, and Jaguar independent rear suspension with six adjustable coilovers and four-wheel discs keeps the chassis serious about its driving. Add pin-drive Halibrand-style alloys, Smiths gauges, and a Shelby-signed glovebox door, and you have a 427 S/C-style roadster that's far from the typical kit car!

Description

This 1986 Brightwheel Viper Cobra 427 S/C replica was factory built in England by Brightwheel Replicas as a left-hand-drive export car in 1986, and is reportedly one of approximately 260 Brightwheel Vipers of all variants produced from 1986 to 1989. Powered by a developed 351ci Ford Windsor V8 with GT-40 aluminum heads and paired with a Tremec T5 5-speed manual transmission, this roadster features Jaguar independent rear suspension, six adjustable coilovers, four-wheel power disc brakes, and pin-drive Halibrand-style alloy wheels. It came to California in the mid-1990s and is offered with a clean Washington title, where it is registered as a 1965 Ford, and extensive history and documentation.

Porsche Alaska Blue with full-length white stripes, which coat the fiberglass body, is complemented by chrome bumperettes, grille surround, roll bar, side pipes, and fuel filler.

The car rides on pin-drive Halibrand-style alloy wheels covered with staggered-width Avon radial tires.

Inside the cockpit are found bucket seats clad in black leather and separated by a center console, five-point Simpsons harnesses, and Carroll Shelby-signed glovebox. Like the engine bay, the trunk is also lined in stainless steel.

As seen through the three-spoke Cobra steering wheel, Smiths gauges fill the black padded dash. The 5-digit odometer shows 21,805 miles and a fire extinguisher is affixed atop the console forward of the shifter.

The 351ci Ford Windsor V8 is topped with GT-40 aluminum heads, housed in a stainless-lined engine bay, and paired with a Tremec T5 5-speed manual transmission.

A Jaguar independent rear suspension anchors the back of the chassis, and six adjustable coilovers manage ride and handling. Four-wheel power disc brakes bring the car to a halt.
