Listen to the dual four-barrel carburetors draw air into this rebuilt 331 FirePower HEMI V8! I personally love the high-rpm, solid-lifter NASCAR style and this Chrysler nails it with a lightweight interior and gloss black finish that screams pure 1950s speed-shop rebellion. This is a rare race-inspired Mopar that won't rip your skin off your bones when you drive it, striking a good balance between old school rowdy racing and effortless cruising.
Description
This 1955 Chrysler C-300 is one of 1,725 examples produced for the inaugural year of the legendary "Letter Car" series, widely recognized as America's first true performance muscle car. Acquired by the seller in 2019, this C-300 features a fully rebuilt 331ci FirePower high-performance Hemi V8 paired with a rebuilt PowerFlite two-speed automatic transmission, factory-style black paint, and a race-inspired tan leather interior. It is now offered with spare parts, an additional set of wheel covers, and a New Jersey title carrying an "exceeds mechanical limits" notation.
The exterior was refinished in black under previous ownership approximately ten years ago. The new for 1955 Chrysler styling is enhanced with a C300-only grille treatment and 300 badging. The seller notes a quarter-size blemish on the rear bumper.
The car rides on 15-inch six-slot steel wheels mounted with 235/75 Uniroyal Tiger Paw radial tires.
The cabin features front and rear bench seats upholstered in tan leather accompanied by a matching headliner and door panels. Radio, heater, and carpet delete are evident as are hand-operated windows and front lap belts with quick disconnect latches.
The driver operates the car via a two-spoke steering wheel with a chrome horn ring set ahead of a 150-mph speedometer and a combination gauge. A column-mounted tachometer and the fuel gauge are currently non-functional. The five-digit mechanical odometer shows 28,000 miles, approximately 850 of which were added under current ownership; total mileage is unknown.
The engine bay houses a rebuilt 331ci FirePower high-performance Hemi V8 equipped with solid lifters, dual four-barrel carburetors, a "batwing" air cleaner, block-hugger exhaust headers, and a high-torque starter motor. The electrical system is converted to 12 volts, supported by an alternator upgrade, and the car is equipped with a dual-reservoir brake master cylinder and a refurbished radiator. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a rebuilt PowerFlite two-speed automatic transmission.
The chassis utilizes independent front suspension and a live rear axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs. Springs were upgraded to racing specification by previous owners. Manual four-wheel drum brakes provide stopping power and received a fluid flush in 2022. The rear axle is equipped with 3.54" gears. Some minor surface corrosion is evident in photos.
