Wrench Report

Enjoy classic '55 T-Bird styling without the 1950s maintenance headaches in this factory-licensed Shay reproduction. Combining a durable fiberglass body with a mild-cammed 302ci Ford V8, cold-blowing air conditioning, and Mustang II independent front suspension, this roadster delivers timeless two-seater glamour paired with smooth, modern turn-key reliability.

Description

This factory-licensed Shay 1955 Ford Thunderbird reproduction features fiberglass bodywork over modern Ford mechanicals. Powered by a 302ci Ford V8 paired with a C4 automatic transmission, the roadster incorporates modern air conditioning, Mustang II front suspension, power steering, power front disc brakes, and a removable hardtop. Located in Wild Rose, Wisconsin, it is now offered titled as a 1955 Ford Thunderbird with a clean Arizona title.

The fiberglass bodywork replicates the iconic 1955 Thunderbird design, complete with bright chrome bumpers, trim, and clear glass with a replacement windshield installed in spring 2026. Equipment includes custom LED headlights and LED taillights (with factory 12-volt sealed-beam units included), hand-crank side windows, a snap-in cockpit tonneau cover, and a removable color-matched hardtop accompanied by a pulley rope hoist system.

The car rides on chrome 15-inch Torq Thrust-style wheels featuring a 5x4.5-inch bolt pattern, wrapped in Toyo Extensa radial tires that measure 195/65 R15 in front and back.

The cabin features adjustable bucket seats with lap belts, additional storage space behind the seatbacks, a padded dashboard updated in spring 2026, and replacement carpeting. Amenities include a functional heater, cold-blowing air conditioning, and a power-retractable radio antenna wired to rear Pioneer speakers (stereo head unit deleted).

The driver operates the roadster via a newly installed tilt steering column set ahead of a full suite of functional VDO gauges monitoring speed, oil pressure, and system voltage.

The engine bay houses a 302ci Ford V8 featuring a mild performance camshaft, an Edelbrock 600-cfm four-barrel carburetor, an Edelbrock intake manifold, an electronic distributor, a 100-amp alternator, and an aluminum radiator supported by both mechanical and electric cooling fans. Power is routed through a C4 three-speed automatic transmission to an 8-inch Ford rear axle with highway-friendly gearing. Recent mechanical work includes a complete wiring harness replacement and new throttle cable installed in late 2025.

The chassis utilizes a Mustang II-style independent front suspension setup complemented by rear air shocks and power-assisted steering. Stopping power is managed by a power brake system featuring front disc brakes and rear drums.

behind the seats on the rear deck area, are the original soft top swing arms brackets and pivot plates still bolted to the body?

DeuceCoop1932 Seller Sep 14, 8:23 am PDT
This has the flat plates with the treaded holes for the fasteners, that clamp the hard top down.
DeuceCoop1932 Seller Sep 14, 8:26 am PDT
The flat plates show up in a couple of the photos. Thank you for your interest.

Info on history of the motor? Milage, year, etc.

DeuceCoop1932 Seller Sep 14, 7:15 am PDT
I have not looked for the engine block #'s. Gauges are VDO replacements. She starts instantly, no smoke, no oil consumption, runs strong. Internet says most of these were manufactured 1983 - 1984. No accurate production #s.

does this also have a convertable top

DeuceCoop1932 Seller Sep 13, 2:27 pm PDT
I have only the removable hardtop with the pulley lift system. I have found soft tops available, new and used. Thank you for your interest and inquiry.

Does it have a functioning cruise control?

DeuceCoop1932 Seller Sep 11, 6:21 am PDT
Good Morning! The T-Bird does not have cruise control at this time, other than a steady foot on the gas pedal. Being a Ford 302 motor, and modern wiring, I am sure one could be installed. It does carry "healthy" vacuum, and even has a vacuum reservoir. We took it to the "Back To The Fifties" car show, St. Paul, MN, and had no problems with steady speed, on the freeway. Thank you for your inquiry and interest.

Is the car in AZ?

DeuceCoop1932 Seller Sep 10, 2:27 pm PDT
Thank you for your inquiry. The car is kept in central Wisconsin, zip code 54984. However it is titled and licensed Arizona. I do this because AZ title transfer and licensing of older vehicles is very low cost. We are residents of AZ from October until md-May. The car is in dry storage, when we are gone.

Do the windshield wipers, turn signals, horn etc all work? Does the top leak? It appears the drivers door is not aligned correctly or is this just the angle of the photo?

DeuceCoop1932 Seller Sep 9, 2:48 pm PDT
Yes, the wipers, signals, horn, high/low beam headlights, tail/stop lights, all work. The top of windshield/top cross bar does not leak. Very minor leaks at where the side windshield frame and door front pillars meet, (better WS will cure. Headlights and Tail/Stop lights are very bright LED's. Ummm? It appears I did not completely close the door, (driver's side). Amateur photographer!

Is it titled as a Shay Motors car?

DeuceCoop1932 Seller Sep 9, 5:53 am PDT
Thank you for your inquiry. No, it is has a very clear AZ title, in my name, as a 1955 Ford Thunderbird. I am a 8 month resident of AZ. They allow cars to be titled as they represent. Thank you for your question.
DeuceCoop1932 Seller Sep 9, 5:58 am PDT
Thank you for your inquiry. The car has a very clear State of Arizona title, in my name, as a 1955 Ford Thunderbird. AZ allows cars to titled as they "represent". We reside in AZ for the 8 colder months. Glad to answer your question.
DeuceCoop1932 Seller • Sep 8, 2:31 pm PDT

The A/C blows very cold and the heater is very warm.
Please, do not hesitate to ask me any questions. Thank you for your interests.

DeuceCoop1932 Seller • Sep 8, 2:28 pm PDT

Hello: I am the owner of this '55 T-Bird. She is a very fun "cruiser", that will impress with acceleration. She will cruise comfortably down the freeway at 75-80 mph, or do car show slow cruises, and stay cool. A/C

DeuceCoop1932 Seller Sep 8, 2:33 pm PDT
Yes, she gets a lot of attention at gas stations, intersections, and car shows.
