Wrench Report

By Chris Esparza

RestoMods Head Mechanic. 20 year classic car mechanic & builder.

An aggressive, pro-touring show quality build that adds a lot of modern upgrades for performance and reliability. The real focus is on that fuel-injected, aluminum-headed Pontiac 400ci V8, that's gonna be a lot of fun to cruise with a 200-4R overdrive transmission, and the reliability extends to the drivetrain thanks to Wilwood disc brakes and updated suspension geometry. Blast the A/C or drop the top on this thing and cruise!

Description

This 1964 Pontiac GTO convertible coupe is a custom restomod that represents a comprehensive, pro-touring style restoration. Outfitted with an upgraded Pontiac V8 engine, fuel injection, modern overdrive, and a custom interior, this classic muscle car has been thoroughly engineered for performance and reliability. It is currently offered by the California Automobile Museum out of Sacramento, California, and is accompanied by a clean California title.

The exterior is finished in a red gloss exterior color with a black convertible top that is said to be in excellent condition. Visual features include a factory-style scooped hood, revised chrome bumpers, and a dual exhaust system utilizing custom Doug's Headers that lead to Magnaflow mufflers exiting out the rear via polished multi-tip configurations.

The vehicle stands on a set of custom-polished Boyd Coddington "Junkyard Dog" mag-style alloy wheels. These premium wheels are wrapped in high-performance BFGoodrich G-Force radial tires to ensure modern road-holding and traction capabilities. The rear trunk has been completely customized with upholstered side panels and a clean floor mat bearing the iconic GTO emblem.

The cabin has been completely stripped and refurbished with a premium custom interior featuring bolstered black bucket seats accented by embroidered "GTO" insignia. The interior includes a modern Vintage Air climate control system, custom door panels, new carpeting, and an updated Custom Autosound retro-style radio head unit equipped with modern Bluetooth connectivity.

Other interior features include a custom sports steering wheel mounted to a tilt steering column, which sits ahead of a completely modernized dashboard. The original instrument cluster has been replaced with a full complement of AutoMeter analog gauges that monitor vehicle speed, engine RPM, fuel level, water temperature, oil pressure, and charging voltage.

The detailed engine bay houses a Pontiac 400ci V8 engine that has been heavily upgraded with Edelbrock Performance aluminum cylinder heads and a matching Edelbrock intake manifold. Modern fuel management is handled by an MSD Atomic throttle-body electronic fuel injection (EFI) system supported by a complete MSD electronic ignition system with a high-energy coil, an MSD distributor, and Taylor spark plug wires. Cooling is managed by a Meziere electric water pump paired with twin SPAL electric cooling fans mounted to an aluminum radiator. The vehicle's entire electrical network has been overhauled with a modern Painless Performance wiring harness and a fresh Duracell battery. Power is directed to the rear wheels through a Pontiac 200-4R four-speed automatic transmission with overdrive for efficient highway cruising. The drivetrain routes power back to a rugged Currie 9-inch rear end housing a traction-grabbing Detroit Locker differential. The upgraded chassis is equipped with modern performance steering and an exceptional four-wheel power disc brake system sourced from Wilwood.

Very low money for a beautiful GTO like that

Am I missing something? Where are the "The exterior retains its iconic stacked-headlight silhouette". Are you sure you have the right vehicle here? Please clarify, thank you.

joeshmo Staff Jul 15, 9:37 pm PDT
@robdal923 @Carsalesguy Good catch! We’ve corrected that typo.
CALorence4 • Jul 15, 10:20 am PDT

Do you have PHS on this car to show it is a true GTO option? Not a clone?

Carsalesguy Seller Jul 15, 12:49 pm PDT
I’m sorry, I don’t have that information. This car was consigned to our auto Museum to sell by the widow of the person who built the car. I understand you can decipher that via the Vin number, but I don’t have that information.
route40 Jul 16, 3:49 pm PDT
The vin will decipher it as a Lemans or Tempest. You need the original build sheet or the PHS report to know if it is a factory GTO. Without this information you won't get even close to the price I'm sure your client is hoping for.
CALorence4 Jul 16, 4:13 pm PDT
I totally agree with route40. without the phs there is no way you can call it a GTO. It is going to be a Lemans or tempest...but need to see if it came from the factory as a GTO option, which was the first year of that option...
Carsalesguy Seller Jul 18, 7:07 am PDT
Thanks for the info. I’ll look thru the binder of receipts to see if we have that info
Carsalesguy Seller Jul 18, 7:09 am PDT
What would I look for on the bill sheet? Is there a code?
CALorence4 Jul 18, 8:10 am PDT
I would post anything you have and then people can decipher it, I think without documentation you will not get a very good bidding number
miklit84 Jul 18, 2:13 pm PDT
From what I read, the VIN says it was a factory 6cyl car since the VIN starts with a 6. But that's just from Google. So that would mean it wasn't a true GTO
jimmy Jul 19, 11:27 am PDT
For a 1964 Pontiac, the number you provided: 624F4791 appears to be missing two digits. A 1964 Pontiac VIN should have 10 characters in this format: 6 2 4 F 04791X (or similar) If we decode what you gave: 6 = 6-cylinder engine 2 = LeMans series (if that's correct) 4 = 1964 model year F = Built at the Fremont, California assembly plant 4791 = Early production sequence number (Pontiac started numbering at 1001).
Carsalesguy Seller Jul 20, 10:54 am PDT
do not have that document sorry
