Wrench Report
RestoMods Head Mechanic. 20 year classic car mechanic & builder.
Well if the line-lock switch on the gated shifter isn't an easy clue that this '65 Chevy II was built for maximum launch, then maybe the massive drag radials are! The 462ci big-block barks to life with that signature solid-lifter mechanical idle, while the Glasstec tilt front nose and straight Speedway front axle give it an unmistakable old-school gasser stance. Between the QA1 coilovers, Wilwood stoppers, and the massive 18.5-inch Mickey Thompson rubber out back, it's a lethal, lightweight big-block package that delivers pure straight-line adrenaline.
Description
This 1965 Chevrolet Chevy II is a gasser drag-style machine powered by a 1970-spec 454ci Mark IV big-block V8 bored out to 462ci and paired with a Turbo Hydra-Matic automatic transmission. Featuring a lightweight Glasstec front clip, straight Speedway front axle, four-wheel Wilwood disc brakes, and tubbed rear geometry, this build has logged under 4,000 miles since completion. It is now offered with a clean Washington title.

The exterior features a lightweight Glasstec tilt front clip paired with a removable fiberglass hood secured by hood pins. Body styling retains classic first-generation Nova hardtop lines with chrome bumpers, bright trim, and simplified drag-spec bodywork.

The car rides on Weld Racing forged alloy wheels wrapped in skinnies up front and large 18.5-inch Mickey Thompson drag radial tires out back.

The cabin features a mostly stock interior layout but has been equipped with more modern GM bucket seats and an updated wiring harness throughout. Steering and brake line lock controls are integrated into the cockpit control layout. The back seat has been deleted to allow fitment of the tubs and half roll cage.

The driver operates the car via an aftermarket 3-spoke steering wheel on a quick-ratio Vega steering box facing a factory dash assembly. An aftermarket tachometer is mounted to the column and an aftermarket gated shifter is equipped with a handle-mounted button to operate the front line lock system.

The engine bay houses a 1970-spec Mark IV big-block V8 built to solid-lifter LS6 specification and bored to 462ci. Build hardware includes forged aluminum pistons, a forged steel crankshaft, heavy-duty connecting rods, rectangular-port iron cylinder heads, and an 800-cfm Holley four-barrel carburetor. Cooling is managed by a Griffin aluminum radiator. Exhaust flows through performance headers into a dual side-exit exhaust setup. Power is routed through a Turbo Hydra-Matic automatic transmission to a heavy-duty Pete & Jake's rear end featuring 3.50:1 gears.
![]()
The chassis utilizes a Speedway straight front axle setup paired with QA1 adjustable coilover shocks at all four corners. Stopping power is managed by a four-wheel disc brake system fed by a Wilwood master cylinder and an inline electro-mechanical front line lock system.
