Wrench Report

A clean fastback that is ready to be driven. Upgraded with a crisp 302ci V8, a C4 automatic, and a freshly reupholstered custom interior, this classic Mustang offers an iconic, timeless look that's ready for immediate weekend cruising. I particularly like the wheel choice that gives it a modern and refreshed look.

Description

This 1965 Ford Mustang Fastback is a restored example that is finished in a Shelby GT350 tribute trim and stripe package. Originally leaving the factory as a 289ci V8 car, the vehicle now houses an updated small-block 302 engine paired with an automatic transmission and a refreshed interior layout. Benefiting from fresh exterior paint and updated powertrain, this classic first-generation fastback is now offered by the selling dealer with a clean Michigan title.

The exterior features fresh paint accented by painted black vinyl racing stripes running over the hood, roof, and trunk deck, alongside matching lower rocker-panel GT350 side stripes. The body preserves its iconic early-fastback roofline, functional sail panel vents, and chrome trim bumpers. The front grille houses the offset Mustang emblem, and the rear lower valance is updated to accommodate dual exhaust outlets utilizing traditional GT-style chrome tips that exit directly through the sheet metal panels.

The vehicle rides on 17-inch American Racing alloy wheels designed with gloss black spokes and polished chrome outer lips. The retro-style five-spoke wheels are wrapped in a brand-new set of Nitto Motivo performance radial tires. The trunk area retains its original cancer free sheet metal with floor matting, housing the spare tire assembly and factory-style fuel tank plumbing.

The cabin has been completely reupholstered, featuring front bucket seats and a fold-down rear bench wrapped in fresh black vinyl with custom yellow contrast stitching and inserts.

The interior also features the original dashboard and instrumentation, a period correct three-spoke steering wheel. Gear changes for the automatic transmission are managed by a floor-mounted chrome T-handle shifter located inside the center floor tunnel. All interior windows utilize factory manual rollers, and the door weatherstripping has been updated to match the fresh paintwork.

The engine compartment has been updated with a replacement 302ci small-block Ford V8 engine that replaces the factory-equipped 289 block. The engine bay is cleanly sorted and utilizes a Holley four-barrel carburetor, a Cobra air cleaner, matching Cobra valve covers, and a standard ignition distributor setup. Power is directed to a stock-specification rear end via a durable Ford C4 three-speed automatic transmission.

The undercarriage maintains a traditional, period-correct ride feel utilizing factory-specification front coil springs, rear leaf springs, and standard hydraulic shock absorbers as well as the standard 8 inch rear end. Steering remains manually operated, and stopping power is delivered by a standard four-wheel hydraulic drum braking system connected to original-style hard lines.

If you cna buy a restored running driving 1965 Mustang Fastback for $12k buy it immediatley! A 1965 Mustang Fastback for $12,000 will almost certainly be a heavy project car requiring full frame-up restoration. Why a $12,000 Fastback is a ProjectAt this price point, you can expect the car to fall into one of these categories:Shell/Roller: A stripped body without an engine or transmission.Rust Bucket: Severe rust in the floor pans, frame rails, cowl, and torque boxes—repairs that often cost more than the car itself.Fire or Flood Damage: Potential title issues or total mechanical rebuild requirements.
