Wrench Report
RestoMods Head Mechanic. 20 year classic car mechanic & builder.
At first glance, this 1966 Mustang convertible captures the timeless appeal of a first-generation pony car drop-top with clean panel alignment and classic red-line tires. You don't see special order examples come up often, though it now looks great in Candyapple red and houses an updated 302ci small-block V8 paired with a C4 automatic transmission and a power-operated vinyl soft top.
Description
This 1966 Ford Mustang convertible was built at the Dearborn assembly plant on August 26, 1966. Originally built as a C-code 289ci V8 model with a 2-barrel carburetor, the vehicle retains its factory District Sales Office (DSO) designation on the data plate. This vehicle is said to have come from the factory as a Special Order vehicle in a non-factory paint color as noted by the missing color code on the data plate. It has since been repainted and updated with a 302ci V8 engine paired with a C4 automatic transmission. Showing 53,271 miles on the odometer (true mileage unknown), this Mustang is now offered by the selling dealer with a clean Tennessee title.

The exterior is finished in Candyapple Red, which the seller notes is a prior repaint at some point in the vehicle's life. The original body color is unknown due to this car being ordered in a special one-off color. The body features a manually-operated white vinyl soft top. The seller states that the door, hood, and trunk panel alignment remains proper across the vehicle.

The vehicle sits on factory-style 14 inch wheels fitted with full wheel covers and BFGoodrich Silvertown red-line radial tires.

The rear trunk compartment houses a standard floor mat and a spare tire setup.

The interior features a black vinyl upholstery layout, which the seller states is in excellent condition. The dashboard, carpeting, and door panels are all finished in black.

The driver operates the vehicle via a factory three-spoke steering wheel. The stock instrument cluster houses primary operational gauges, and the rest of the dashboard features the standard lighting and wiper controls, as well as a factory radio. Also shown is the floor-mounted C4 automatic transmission shift lever.

Like all V8-powered Mustangs of the 1965 and 1966 model years, this car originally came from the factory with a 289ci small block Ford. The engine bay now houses a 302ci small block Ford V8 engine fitted with an electric choke carburetor and an OE-style air cleaner assembly. Power is directed to the rear wheels via a C4 three-speed automatic transmission.

Shown here is the Mustang's factory data plate, indicating that the vehicle is a true 76A coded convertible (also by the code "08" in the 3rd and 4th digits of the VIN). Special Order vehicles were known to have codes missing from the data plate if one-off options were equipped, such as the paint color in this case. The seller reports that the floor structure is solid overall, though they note a minor non-structural rust spot under the passenger-side floorboard. Steering and suspension components retain their factory layout, and stopping power is provided by standard four-wheel drum brakes.
