Wrench Report

RestoMods Head Mechanic. 20 year classic car mechanic & builder.

Who says front-wheel drive can't pack serious presence? Decked out in Candy Cherry Cola Pearl paint with electric-converted hidden headlights, this '66 Toronado reinvents the classic personal luxury coupe with an aggressive restomod edge. Between the air-shock adjustable stance, front disc brake conversion, and B&M floor shifter controlling that massive Olds V8, it delivers an unmistakable 1960s boulevard cruiser vibe with modern usability.

Description

This 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado is a first-year example of Oldsmobile's ground-breaking front-wheel-drive personal luxury coupe. Powered by a 425ci 7.0L V8 paired with a rebuilt automatic transmission, this Texas-sourced Toronado features reversible restomod upgrades including a front disc brake conversion, electric-converted hidden headlights, air shocks, and a custom interior layout. Offered with all removed original parts--including the factory power front bench seat and original transmission--it carries a clean Pennsylvania title.

The body is finished in Candy Cherry Cola Pearl paint. Exterior details include electric-converted pop-up headlights, polished side trim, dual exhaust tips, and chrome front and rear bumpers. The seller notes the underlying body structure is solid with minimal surface rust.

The car rides on factory-style steel wheels with new tires up front, while rear ride height and load support are supported by an air shock setup with an onboard air compressor and pressure gauge.

The cabin is updated with maroon vinyl and cloth bucket seats installed in place of the non-functional factory power bench seat without modifying the floor and separated by a custom center console. Interior appointments include a tilt steering column, a 7-inch touchscreen head unit with a backup camera, and an intact factory dashboard layout.

The interior also features an aftermarket steering wheel positioned ahead of aftermarket and auxiliary mechanical gauges for oil pressure and engine metrics. Floor controls feature a B&M ratchet shifter managing transmission selection. The original barrel speedometer will go with the car.

The engine bay houses a 425ci V8 equipped with a new four-barrel carburetor, HEI electronic ignition, a rebuilt starter, a new alternator, and an aluminum radiator with dual 12-inch electric fans. The fuel tank was cleaned, repaired, and sealed, while exhaust flows through a stainless-steel dual exhaust system. Power is routed to the front wheels through a rebuilt automatic transmission mated to new front axle assemblies and fresh front wheel bearings.

The front-wheel-drive chassis utilizes factory longitudinal torsion bars up front and a rear beam axle with a multi-shock setup. Chassis updates include a replacement steering box, new suspension bushings, and a front disc brake conversion paired with hydraulic rear drums.

I purchased this Toronado Deluxe as a roller that sat in a Texas storage building for 20 plus years, the last inspection in Texas was 2001. We rebuilt or replaced the inoperable parts and rebuilt those we could. All original parts are available and can go with the car if the buyer provides the shipping or pick up. Ask what ever questions you have, I'll di my best to answer them. Thanks for looking and good luck bidding!

The barrel speedometer is not in the car, I have the original instrument cluster available with the car.
