Wrench Report

By Chris Esparza

RestoMods Head Mechanic. 20 year classic car mechanic & builder.

Life may not ever feel like a movie, but it certainly does when you get behind the wheel of this Dukes of Hazzard movie car! This two-tone '67 Chevelle is a prime example of flashy, early 2000s restomod culture and features some great go-fast parts that likely make it a blast to drive. A 540 big block, coilover suspension and disc brakes at all fours, racing harnesses and a full cage make this street car a contender on and off the drag strip but it's still a comfortable ride with Vintage Air blowing on your face.

Description

This 1967 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu sport coupe is a high-performance build commissioned by Year One in 2003, and featured in the 2005 film The Dukes of Hazzard. Built as a street-legal Super Stock drag-touring machine, the rotisserie-restored A-body is powered by a 540ci World Products Merlin II V8 paired with a TCI reverse-pattern TH400 three-speed automatic transmission with a trans brake and Gear Vendors overdrive. Finished in custom House of Kolor two-tone paint over a reinforced chassis, the car features Holley electronic fuel injection, a full roll cage, four-wheel disc brakes, and Vintage Air climate control. It is now offered with movie correspondence, build documentation, a 2003 Hot Rod Magazine issue, dyno sheets, removed parts, and a clean title in the seller's name.

The body was separated from the frame and restored on a rotisserie before being refinished in House of Kolor Blue Blood Red and Orion Silver, split by an orange pinstripe terminating in rear quarter-panel flames. Body modifications include a Year One composite cowl-induction hood, powder-coated exterior trim, silver-finished bumpers, shaved emblems, an exterior electrical shutoff, and screened air intake scoops replacing the inner headlights.

The car rides on Billet Specialties 17-inch front and 18-inch rear alloy wheels wrapped in Nitto NT555 Extreme ZR front tires (245/45) and Nitto NT555R Extreme Drag radial rear rubber (305/45).

The cabin features red vinyl-upholstered Firebird front bucket seats, a factory-style rear bench seat, custom door panels, and a custom center console, all protected by a fabricated multi-point roll cage with door bars. Interior appointments include a driver-side multi-point harness, Vintage Air heating and air conditioning, a Hurst pistol-grip shifter, custom switch gear for the trans brake and overdrive, and quarter-vent windows. A custom fuel cell, Optima battery, battery tender, and a one-gallon Moon tank are mounted in the trunk.

The driver operates the Chevelle via a Billet Specialties steering wheel on a Flaming River tilt column ahead of an AutoMeter Pro-Comp Ultra-Lite instrument cluster. Auxiliary digital air/fuel and transmission temperature readouts are integrated into the custom dash and console. The mechanical odometer displays 8,000 miles, approximately 5,000 of which were added under current ownership.

The engine bay houses a 540ci V8 built on a World Products Merlin II block with rectangular-port Merlin II aluminum cylinder heads, an Eagle forged crankshaft, Manley connecting rods, JE pistons, and a COMP camshaft. Induction is supplied by Holley EFI with dual high-flow intake pipes fed by the headlight scoops. Supporting hardware includes MSD ignition, an Aeromotive fuel pressure regulator, and a BeCool aluminum radiator with dual electric fans. Dyno testing from 2003 showed 510 horsepower and 509 lb-ft of torque on pump gas. A nitrous kit is installed and fully functional, though the seller notes he has never used it. Exhaust flows through Hooker Competition headers into a dual exhaust system with cutouts and chambered mufflers. Power is delivered through a TCI reverse-pattern TH400 automatic with a 2,500-rpm stall converter, a trans brake, and Gear Vendors overdrive, linked to a 12-bolt rear axle with 33-spline Moser axles, an Eaton limited-slip differential, and 4.10:1 gears.

The reinforced frame was modified to set the engine 2 inches back and lower toward the firewall. The chassis features Global West tubular control arms, drop spindles, manual rack-and-pinion steering, QA1 coilovers, reinforced rear ladder bars, and an upgraded rear sway bar. Stopping power is provided by unassisted red-finished calipers over slotted 12-inch front and 10-inch rear brake discs.

Pump gas friendly 9.5 to 1 compression ratio, 670 HP engine with great street manners and a very intimidating idle. Runs 2800 RPM at 80 mph with the overdrive. Ice cold AC. This is a well thought out and ground breaking street car.

mtyrol Seller • Sep 9, 9:10 am PDT

When owned by Year One they took the car on Power Tour and it ran a best of 9.81 seconds at 138 mph in the 1/4 mile. Just before I bought the car the engine was freshened with new rings and bearings, the cam was changed to a smaller more steetable roller and new valve springs were installed. I have not raced the car or used the nitrous setup. Engine has about 5k street and highway driven miles and runs perfect. This car may have started the “Drag-Touring” trend!

mtyrol Seller • Sep 9, 5:19 am PDT

For the Dukes of Hazzard film this car was used for the close up shots only. A complete set of stickers are included if you want the car to look like it did in the film. A replica car was built and used for the driving and crash scenes.

Hello and welcome to the auction of my Year One Chevelle. I bought the car from Year One in 2006. This is build #5 from their Ghost Works shop and was used extensively for marketing and promotion by Year One and Gear Vendors. Open any Hot Rod Magazine from the 2000’s and it’s on the last page! Car is often taken to local shows and cruise nights, and has been taken on several long road trips as well. Well maintained and super reliable. Appraised for $150k in 2006, build cost today would far exceed that. Don’t miss this special car! Owned 20 years and time for something new.
