Wrench Report

By Chris Esparza

RestoMods Head Mechanic. 20 year classic car mechanic & builder.

A solid GTO tribute that updates a classic LeMans hardtop with serious big-block Pontiac power and modern suspension. The build pairs a 400-horsepower 455ci V8 and a TH400 automatic with a Hurst "His & Hers" dual-gate shifter, riding on a QA1 adjustable coilover suspension and a 12-bolt 4.11:1 Positraction rear axle. Very ideal cruiser that gives you a little more fun at the rear wheels thanks to that upgraded powerplant and drivetrain.

Description

This 1967 Pontiac LeMans hardtop is a GTO tribute featuring a 400 horsepower 455ci V8 built with high-performance internal hardware, a TH400 automatic transmission with a Hurst His & Hers shifter, standard black vinyl interior, and a black vinyl top with a burgundy body color. The car utilizes updated suspension components, aftermarket digital instrumentation, and a heavy-duty rear differential layout. The seller states the body is rust-free with total mileage unknown). It is now offered by the selling dealer with a clean title.

The hardtop body is finished with GTO-style badging and trim elements, complemented by a black vinyl top. Exterior brightwork includes chrome bumpers, dual side mirrors, and standard factory-style lighting assemblies.

The car comes with both 14-inch factory Pontiac Rally wheels and a set of 15-inch American Racing Torq Thrust wheels with both sets wrapped in Cooper Cobra Radial G/T tires.

The cabin is trimmed in black leather upholstery with front bucket seats separated by a factory-style center console. Modernization includes a set of Dakota Digital gauges set into the main instrument housing to monitor engine and vehicle performance.

The driver operates the car via a factory three-spoke steering wheel. Floor controls feature a Hurst "His & Hers" dual-gate shifter integrated into the center console to manage transmission shifting modes.

The engine bay houses a 455ci Pontiac V8 rated by the seller at approximately 400 horsepower. Internal assembly details include ARP hardware, forged pistons providing a 10.1:1 compression ratio, a COMP Cams Xtreme Energy camshaft, a Holley carburetor, an electric fuel pump, an MSD ignition box, and an ignition coil. Exhaust is routed through a 2.5-inch dual exhaust system, and engine cooling is provided by an aluminum radiator with an engine driven fan. Power is directed through a TH400 three-speed automatic transmission to a 12-bolt Positraction rear axle housing 4.11:1 differential gears.

The chassis is updated with QA1 suspension components at all four corners, including QA1 adjustable coilover shocks and torsion bars. Stopping power is provided by power front disc brakes and rear drums.

I just lowered the reserve and I’m motivated to sell! The lucky person who takes this car home will also get a brand-new set of American Racing wheels and tires, new lug nuts, and two sets of center caps included with the car. GOOD LUCK!!

Is the Maroon a factory Pontiac color, or correct for the year? If not, do you have the color Code needed for touch ups etc? Do the Power Windows all work?

Jfuentes Seller Aug 12, 11:49 am PDT
All the power windows work properly. I couldn’t find any signs that the car was ever a different color, and I also have some matching paint for future touch-ups.
bobbyd38 Aug 12, 12:19 pm PDT
Thanks for the quick reply. Do you have a paint code just in case fresh paint was needed in the future?
Jfuentes Seller Aug 12, 12:51 pm PDT
Yes I do !

The GTO is a souped-up LeMans. Beautiful color combo. Maroon with a black vinyl top. Excellent build. 12 bolt rear with 4:11's, not a long distant cruiser. Excellent build. I would expect this car to go out at least $30k. Out of my budget as I bid on the '67 Mustang already.

Jfuentes Seller Aug 11, 8:49 am PDT
Yeah, you’re right about that. Trust me, you can’t go wrong with this ’67 GTO clone at that price! It would cost way more to build one like this from scratch.
Iamdpull • Aug 11, 5:57 am PDT

What octane fuel do you use in the vehicle?

Jfuentes Seller Aug 11, 8:47 am PDT
It’s a pump gas ⛽️ 93 octane!!!
Iamdpull Aug 11, 9:16 am PDT
Sad, but that was my guess. Highest pump gas I can get in my area is 91, and that can make a world of difference. Thx.
Jfuentes Seller Aug 11, 3:44 pm PDT
Yes, it takes pump gas. I meant 91 octane is perfectly fine!

How long ago was the Restoration/Restomod work done? Any Body panels/Sheet metal replaced? Has it always been a Florida Car?

Jfuentes Seller Aug 7, 7:10 pm PDT
Thanks for the question. The restoration/restomod was completed by a previous owner, so I don’t have the exact date of the full restoration. However, based on the documentation and receipts I have, a significant portion of the restomod work—including the suspension and exhaust—appears to have been done around 2021. I have Summit Racing receipts from that period associated with the Delray Beach, Florida area.

The restoration appears to have been done to a very high standard, and the car has held up exceptionally well. As far as I know, the car is rust-free, and I have not found any evidence of rust or major body panel/sheet metal replacement.

What Comp Cam was used in the build of this engine?

Jfuentes Seller Aug 6, 11:52 am PDT
“I’m not sure of the exact grind, but it’s a COMP Cams Xtreme Energy hydraulic cam. It has a very aggressive, lopey idle and pulls hard. The 455 is built with forged pistons, ARP bolts throughout the bottom end, and 10.1:1 compression.”

AC car?

Jfuentes Seller Aug 6, 11:48 am PDT
“No, it doesn’t have air conditioning. The car was built as a performance-oriented classic and currently has no A/C installed.”

How did they deal with the three scallops on the quarter panel? Did they replace the quarter panels or fill them in?

Just body worked them
