Wrench Report

By Chris Esparza

RestoMods Head Mechanic. 20 year classic car mechanic & builder.

A detailed tribute build that replicates the iconic mid-sixties Shelby performance aesthetic. I really dig the 289 with 302 heads, and the most eyecatching piece of the powertrain is definitely that rare Holley Tri-Power three-carburetor induction setup. With a 4-speed top loader and 3.50 gears, you're definitely going to have a lot of fun taking this GT350 tribute out and spinning the tires.

Description

This 1968 Ford Mustang is set up to resemble a 1967 model year Shelby GT350 and is a professionally built recreation of a Shelby classic. The vehicle started life at the Ford Los Angeles assembly plant as a 1968 289ci C-code Mustang Sportsroof (fastback) before undergoing a comprehensive restoration into a 1967 Shelby GT350 tribute. Now featuring a rebuilt high-performance powertrain, rare induction, and Shelby styling cues, the car is offered with a deluxe Marti Report and a clean Arizona title.

The rust-free body has been refinished in Sunlit Gold two-stage paint complemented by Wimbledon White Shelby GT racing stripes. The exterior incorporates Shelby style fiberglass body panels, including the GT hood, side scoops, and a custom tail panel. Brightwork is in excellent condition and features dual exterior mirrors and a Shelby style flip-open gas cap. Visual highlights include the iconic Shelby style "In-Board" front driving lights and modernized "sequential" rear taillights.

The car stands on a brand-new set of period-correct 15-inch Shelby "Magstar" wheels. These classic multi-spoke wheels are wrapped in fresh BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires, sized 225/60R15 at all four corners. The trunk compartment is cleanly detailed and houses a complete spare tire and jack assembly.

The cabin features factory-style black vinyl upholstery, configured with a rare front bench seat that includes an integrated fold-down center armrest, paired with a functional fold-down rear seat. The safety equipment includes front and rear seatbelts. Auxiliary comfort is supported by a cleanly finished headliner and door panels, while a vintage-style AM/FM radio with modern Bluetooth integration has been installed in the factory dash location.

The driver is presented with a real wood-rimmed three-spoke steering wheel. The dashboard houses fully operational factory instrumentation, augmented by a steering column-mounted 8,000-rpm SunSuperII tachometer. The floor houses the reverse-lockout manual shifter managing the four-speed gearbox.

The engine bay houses a completely rebuilt 289ci small-block V8 engine upgraded with 302 cylinder heads and tube headers. The centerpiece of the engine is a rare Holley Tri-Power three-carburetor induction setup mounted to an aluminum intake manifold, complete with an oval cast-aluminum "Shelby" air cleaner and matching finned-aluminum valve covers. Reliability is enhanced by a Pertronix electronic ignition system and a brand-new battery. Power is routed through a Top-Loader four-speed manual transmission and back to a 3.50:1 posi-traction ("Equi-Loc") rear end.

The chassis undercarriage is said to be clean and highly sorted, having received replacement suspension bushings, fresh springs, and new ball joints. The rear axle is fitted with adjustable air shocks to tune ride quality and stance. Steering is power-assisted, and stopping power is updated with a front disc and rear drum braking combination. Spent gases flow through a dual exhaust system that delivers a classic muscle-car note.

Looking closely at the door jambs and underside photos, the seam sealer and finish around the jambs appear fairly rough compared to the rest of the restoration. Were the door jambs, A-pillars, floors, torque boxes, or frame rails ever repaired or replaced during the build, or are those original panels? Just trying to better understand how much bodywork was performed since there don’t appear to be photos from the restoration process as you mentioned

Thanks for answering everyone’s questions best you can.

KCode65 Bidder • Jul 29, 7:33 am PDT

Seller, the description reads that the car has Bluetooth audio - can you please elaborate as I do not see any speakers in the doors or footwells. Can you share pictures of the speakers to the audio system please

Butch Seller Jul 29, 7:53 am PDT
KCode65, only one speaker in the standard middle dash location
KCode65 Bidder • Jul 28, 10:39 pm PDT

The ‘67 did NOT have the front and rear side reflectors that this ‘68 does, it’s hard to unsee now that it caught my attention. Wonder how much it would cost to delete those, repair, repaint. Oh well. Probably would cost more to overhaul this car to ‘68 GT350 Hood, ‘68 Outboard lights, ‘68 tail lights, ‘68 interior… etc person who did the conversion must’ve run into the same dilemma

Sirlloyd • Jul 28, 2:09 pm PDT

Where is this manual choke located?

Butch Seller Jul 28, 4:20 pm PDT
Sirlloyd, The manual choke in on the right side of the steering column under the dash.
Sirlloyd Jul 28, 4:31 pm PDT
Thanks
KCode65 Bidder • Jul 28, 1:44 pm PDT

Seller, can you elaborate on when the tribute build/conversion was done?

How many miles on the motor/trans? Matching numbers?

Do you have documentation, photos, receipts of the work done?

Bummer about no VIN stamp on the apron, looks like no VIN door-tag either, bummer as well.

Butch Seller Jul 28, 4:31 pm PDT
KCode65, 1. Don't have any exact date or time of the main build/conversion but in my estimation it was probably within the last 5-8 years. 2. Again, no exact knowledge of the engine/trans rebuild but it all looks very fresh; no noise, smoking or leaks. 3. The only photos and documentations that I have is from the $10,000 in parts that I purchased and the work that I have performed. I will make them available to the buyer. The presence of the VIN on the driver's apron really has little significance on a tribute build. Of course, It would be very important for an OE type restoration but that is not the case here. I am having Marti auto works make up a new licensed door-tag that I will make available to any new buyer. You can see a photo of the tag on the Marti report listed below. Thanks!
KCode65 Jul 28, 10:41 pm PDT
Darn, would’ve loved to have at least photos of the build and or who did the work - receipts for all that can really help a restoration like this

Of the $10,000 in documents you have - what was completed that you know for sure and have records of?

Specs on the paint used? Factory sunlit gold paint code?

Butch Seller Jul 27, 8:30 am PDT
Hi KCode65; The paint is a two-stage base/clear and is somewhat brighter than the OE factory Sunlit Gold (and in my opinion a much more appealing and richer color). A copy of the Marti Report has been provided in the comments below and shows the factory paint code as 'Y'. Thanks for the inquiry.
