Wrench Report

By Chris Esparza

RestoMods Head Mechanic. 20 year classic car mechanic & builder.

A highly preserved, rare two-seater muscle car representing one of only 4,116 examples produced for the 1970 model year. I like that this one has been beefed up with a larger displacement 390, while still keeping everything true to factory-style specs. You've got factory air conditioning to keep you cool on summer drives and a three speed automatic for easy cruising.

Description

This 1970 AMC AMX is a rare two-seater muscle car representing one of only 4,116 examples produced for the 1970 model year. Originally leaving the factory equipped with a 360ci engine, the car now houses a larger, period-correct 390ci V8 engine. Built with standard factory chassis components and an original-style cabin layout, this classic American Motors performer is now offered by the selling dealer with a clean Washington title.

The exterior is finished in dark green metallic paint accented by black hockey-stick style side stripes. The AMX retains its distinctively short wheelbase, classic hood design, chrome bumpers, and factory brightwork.

The vehicle sits on period-correct steel wheels wrapped in road tires. The rear deck design remains true to AMC's sports coupe styling, and the trunk area features a standard cover mat.

The cabin is trimmed in a factory-correct pattern featuring black vinyl bucket seats. Just like factory specifications, this AMX does not have rear seats. The interior includes black carpeting and a black headliner. The center console and dashboard are finished with classic woodgrain trim accents, and the vehicle features factory air conditioning in the factory location.

The driver is presented with an aftermarket Grant woodgrain-rimmed steering wheel and the factory gauge cluster and also features a set of under-dash-mounted AutoMeter auxiliary gauges to monitor engine oil pressure and water temperature. Entertainment is updated via an Alpine stereo and head unit, with a speaker assembly installed in the rear bulkhead behind the driver and passenger.

The engine bay houses a period-correct 390ci V8 engine that is rated at 325 horsepower at 5,000 rpm and 425 lb-ft of torque at 3,200 rpm. The engine is configured with an original-style four-barrel carburetor topped with a colorful air cleaner and factory ignition components. Exhaust gases are spent into aftermarket headers and through an update stainless exhaust system, exiting in the stock location at the rear. Power is directed to the rear wheels via a Borg Warner three-speed automatic transmission, and sent to the rear wheels via an AMC Model 20 rear end.

The undercarriage features factory-specification suspension, steering, and braking systems to maintain a period-correct driving feel. Front coil and rear leaf springs and shock absorbers remain in their stock configurations.

Do you happen to know if any of the other items that are missing from the A/C are with the car? This would include the condenser, dryer, and associated plumbing three groove crank pulley and tensioner or should I just assume that if it’s not visible then I would have to find it elsewhere. Also are the rest of the Ram Air parts available? Sorry to ask so many questions but I have owned half a dozen of these cars and many parts are unobtainium. Thank you for your time.

WildAboutCars Seller Jul 27, 9:49 am PDT
No Other parts however the Owner is Highly Confident he can obtain them thru his Social Car Community
WildAboutCars Seller Jul 27, 9:58 am PDT
Also did a quick search on Ebay and there seem to be a number of the A/C units and other various parts readily available and even the ram air ducts etc
Jackster3246 • Jul 26, 2:58 pm PDT

Does the car have functioning A/C the reason I ask is because I don’t see a compressor.

WildAboutCars Seller Jul 26, 3:22 pm PDT
You are correct the Compressor is not installed - it is all plumbed correctly for A/C and would need a compressor mounted and of course the lines connected and the belt for the pulley - It is a Factory A/C car
WildAboutCars Seller Jul 26, 3:24 pm PDT
Factory Compressor is about $250 for the correct AMC/AMX model and they are readily available

Does this AMX have the reclining seats? I'm thinking not but wanted to ask.

WildAboutCars Seller Jul 24, 1:32 pm PDT
1970 did not offer these that was a 68069 option The 1970 seats use a high-back "clamshell" plastic-backed shell design unique to that model year

All AMC V8 engines during this era, whether it be a 290, 304, 343, 360, 390 & 401, were built from the same SMALL block. AMC did not build a big block engine.

WildAboutCars Seller Jul 24, 8:02 am PDT
Big-Block Marketing: AMC heavily marketed the 390 as a high-performance "big-block fighter" during the late-1960s muscle car era to compete against bigger engines from Ford and General Motors. Small-Block Size: Because it is physically compact and shares a single platform with much smaller displacement engines, it is generally categorized by builders as a small-block
WildAboutCars Seller Jul 24, 8:04 am PDT
You are "Technically" Correct AMC Used a Universal Block: The 390 cubic-inch V8 shares the exact same external dimensions and basic block architecture as smaller AMC engines like the 290, 304, and 360, as well as the larger 401 .. we are siding with the Marketing Description as it sounds better LOL

Very Surprised This AMX doesn't Have The Optional P/Discs. AMC was Into Safety. Just About All AMX/Javelins Left The Factry With Discs. At Least At The Dealership I Managed.

WildAboutCars Seller Jul 23, 7:34 am PDT
I hear ya, I have found that many of the cars from this era lack P/Disc or sometime P/Steering Big Block cars from all manufacturers seemed to do this which I always found puzzling, all that power and then lack of adding controls lol...
AMXBob Jul 25, 4:30 pm PDT
You can get aftermarket disc brakes from quite a few manufacturers and nothing is cheap for an AMC I have owned several in my life and I still have the one I bought in 1975. Good luck to the buyers if you win this auction you will love this car.
