Wrench Report

By Chris Esparza

RestoMods Head Mechanic. 20 year classic car mechanic & builder.

Not enough people are restoring and modifying square-bodies, so when one does come up I pay close attention to the details. I really like this fuel-injected, cammed 350 V8 that's been dressed nicely with polished Hedman headers and intake assembly. This one has a great stance with hand-polished Center Line Auto Drag wheels in Mickey Thompson street-drag radials. This California-built, smog-exempt '74 Cheyenne short bed really does everything right in every category of classic street truck.

Description

This 1974 Chevrolet C10 Cheyenne is a factory two-wheel-drive, short-bed pickup built in Fremont, California, that recently underwent a complete frame-off restoration. Powered by a fuel-injected 5.7-liter V8 paired with a built 700R4 four-speed automatic transmission, the California truck features a lowered stance, shaved body details, a modern Vintage Air system, and a custom insulated interior. It is permanently smog-exempt in California and is now offered with video documentation and a clean title.

The exterior features shaved drip rails, removed side moldings, and deleted emblems over a steel dual-cowl hood. Exterior updates include a rear roll pan, a spray-in bedliner, replacement chrome mirrors and door handles, and refurbished 32-gallon factory dual fuel tanks.

The truck sits on hand-polished, USA-made 15-inch Center Line Auto Drag offset wheels wrapped in Mickey Thompson street-drag radials measuring 26X10.00 R15LT in front and 28X12.00 R15LT in the rear. The chassis retains its uncut frame (no C-notch) and is lowered 3 inches in the front and 4 inches in the rear using drop spindles, shackles, and hangers.

The cab was stripped to bare metal, sealed, and lined with ceramic thermal insulation, noise deadening, and Dynamat inside the doors before assembly. Interior appointments include custom bucket seats with power driver and passenger lumbar adjustments, a fold-down center console, custom door panels, a tilt steering column, and a Vintage Air heating and air conditioning system.

The driver operates the vehicle via a custom steering wheel facing a red LED digital dashboard equipped with a GPS-driven speedometer. A B&M Mega Shifter operates the automatic transmission.

The engine bay features a 350ci small-block Chevy V8 fitted with an Edelbrock Performer RPM intake manifold, a performance camshaft, a Performance Distributors HEI system, and a FiTech Go EFI 4 self-tuning fuel injection system. Cooling and electrical hardware include an AGM battery and stainless-wrapped A/C lines. Exhaust flows through polished Hedman headers into a 2.5-inch dual exhaust system. Power is sent through a late-model 700R4 (4L60) four-speed automatic transmission built with an SFI flexplate and a 2,400-rpm stall converter, delivering output to a heavy-duty 12-bolt Posi-traction rear end.

The chassis benefits from a new steering box, tie rods, ball joints, and an idler arm. Stopping power is provided by new power front disc brakes supported by an auxiliary 12V automatic vacuum pump to manage the performance camshaft's vacuum requirements. The seller notes a complete red polyurethane bushing kit is installed to the motor and transmission mounts, sway bar, upper and lower control arms, and areas on the body and frame.

A quick list of the missing receipts that stand out in my mind.
Vintage air with polished compressor and stainless lines
The seats and console
The rear end
custom door panels
Tires
So add about another 7K for a total of over43K without charging any labor at all. That's what you're bidding on. You have an opportunity to get a really great truck here. Good Luck! Thanks for your interest.

2 questions. Was the truck ever wired for a stereo and any idea on horsepower?

GenExcellence Seller Sep 8, 11:36 am PDT
No, there hasn't been a stereo installed since the restoration. Stereos are a personal preference item like wheels, so it will be left to the new owner for that decision. The dash is uncut though, the original factory "old school" type head unit is all that can be installed without cutting into the dash. Regarding HP: based on the motor and all components, it is estimated to be in the 350-375 HP and 400 lb-ft of torque range. it's supporting drivetrain and fueling system are built for much more, so adding HP to the motor would be easy if the new owner desires that.

Thank you for the info. I’m keeping an eye on this auction tomorrow.

You're welcome

Engine question. Was it a gm crate motor and then some added parts like intake and cam? Any additional engine info is greatly appreciated
GenExcellence Seller Sep 8, 2:06 pm PDT
Yes, it is a GM/Chevrolet Performance 5.7L (350) crate motor. It has an Edelbrock Performer RPM polished intake and Edelbrock Performer RPM #7102 hydraulic flat-tappet performance camshaft (.488" intake / .510" exhaust lift, 234°/244° duration @ .050", 112° LSA), along with a high-volume oil pump. It also has a Performance Distributors high-output HEI ignition, FiTech Go EFI 4 600 HP self-tuning EFI system, and polished Hedman headers feeding the 2.5" dual exhaust.

Great info. I like the hedders since my grandfather started the company back in the 50’s.

Very nice Chevy C-10!
Great setup and stance.
Are there any leaks or rust?
Thank you very much.

GenExcellence Seller Sep 3, 8:25 am PDT
Thank you! No sir, No leaks or rust. This is a fresh build. It's basically a brand new 1974 C10 that's better than it was when it rolled off the factory floor.

Welcome, everyone, and good luck with the bidding! I did go ahead and add that red padded liner I mentioned in the video to the center console. It matches the interior really well and came out great. I’ll try to get a quick video of it uploaded later today.

Hello, I just placed the second bid on your
74 Chevy C-10. Very nice build and I'm very interested.
I'm living on Maui, Hawaii and will be moving to Arizona. Will I be able to drive it from San Diego to Phoenix, Arizona? I know it's about 5 to 6 hrs drive, taking my time.
My daughter lives there and I'll be driving it to her place. I'll fly back to Maui, but will leave the C-10 in her garage.
I plan on shipping my Ducati Scrambler Desert Sled 803 to San Diego and hopefully will use your Chevy C-10 to transport back to Arizona.
I used to drive a 71 Chevy C-20 Stepside, 78 & 79 Chevy C-10 4x4, and a 85 Chevy
C-10 4x4. So I'm very familiar with these trucks and after viewing the videos I decided to place my bid. Thank you very much for answering any questions.
GenExcellence Seller Sep 4, 12:16 pm PDT
Hello, sorry for the late reply, I didn't get notified that you left a comment. I don't see any reason you wouldn't be able to make that drive. To transport your bike you'll need some sort of tie down anchor or track system in the bed though. Unless you have some other idea of how to strap it down. Another possible option is: If you're the winning bidder I can deliver the truck to your daughters on a trailer if you cover all my costs. I suppose I could also possibly deliver your bike too. You will have options to choose from if you win the auction. Regards
Arloboy808 Sep 8, 9:56 am PDT
Hello, I forgot to ask if there's a spare tire! Thanks
GenExcellence Seller Sep 8, 11:58 am PDT
No, there is not a spare tire.
